Typoday 2017 — Colombo
International typography conference co-organised in Colombo, Sri Lanka — a founding moment for the Akuru Collective.
Typoday 2017 was an international typography event organised by the Department of Integrated Design, University of Moratuwa (DID, UoM) in collaboration with the Industrial Design Centre (IDC) of the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay), with support from India Design Association (InDeAs) and Aksharaya.
Workshops and research presentations were held on February 23, 24 and 25 at the University of Moratuwa premises and at the Western Province Aesthetic Resort.
Role
A member of the organising committee responsible for:
- Fundraising and sponsorship
- Organising partnerships with international institutions
- Promoting the event in the international typography community
- Curating the programme
Impact
This event opened up new creative opportunities and collaborations for everyone interested in fonts and typography in Sri Lanka. The energy and connections formed at Typoday 2017 were the direct catalyst for founding the Akuru Collective — Sri Lanka’s first sustained typography community.
Programme
The event featured research presentations and workshops from international and local scholars, designers, and typographers focused on South Asian typography, type education, and script design.
